Donkey Kong Country Returns Reborn with a Modern HD Upgrade

0

Donkey‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Kong was the culprit, and Diddy might not have been able to keep their bananas because they are getting back together; the fans of the two couldn’t have been more ecstatic. The way to revisit one of the most fan-friendly platformers of the last several years is now open to players with the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on the Nintendo Switch. So, the return is somewhat beyond the enhanced resolution; it’s also a signal of how the same crew from Metroid Prime, i.e, Retro Studios, got in touch with the past and made a huge impact on Nintendo’s ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌history.

In fact, the company was in dire need of its next project when some of the key members of the staff were leaving the Retro for another place. At that time, Shigeru Miyamoto, who was curious about the idea of a Donkey Kong restart, showed u,p and Tanabe declared Retro to be the most suitable group for the job. The mere idea of this one thing led to a whole new process, which eventually resulted in the creation of the game Donkey Kong Country: Returns, a game that not only honored the SNES classics but at the same time ventured into new areas with the series.

The pressure was off the ground straight away. At a later date, the developers Kynan Pearson, Mike Wikan, and Tom Ivey recounted how a string of shake-ups internally within the studio led to the disappearance of the staff, but this also opened doors for fresh ideas and for a new vision. Most of the newly employed people were die-hard fans of the original trilogy, and this was one of their strong points in their work. Pearson tells of how love for the series as a common ground pushed them to be creative, and that the enthusiasm in their work reached its peak when they were working side by side with developers from Nintendo’s Kyoto branch. The joint effort helped bridge the gap in doubts that Retro was able to do something so different from ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Metroid.

At E3 2010, the announcement of Donkey Kong Country Returns was nothing less than a thunderous splash. It not only managed to bring back the series’ characteristic platforming precision and imaginative level design but also offered a vibrant new look and engaging gameplay mechanics. The game’s success both critically and commercially was so loud that it quickly quieted the skeptics. As Tanabe later remarked, Retro’s natural grasp of the reasons why Donkey Kong Country was great helped it to triumph.

And currently, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is delivering the Donkey Kong magic of the past to the entire new world. The HD remaster will be launched on January 16, 2025, and is basically the first Wii release with all 80 stages. Moreover, the 3DS version has been updated with additional content, so the Switch version is more than just a simple port. It is designed to keep everything that made the original great, but now with improved graphics and smoother performance to match the standard of today’s gaming experience. So, no matter if you are riding mine carts solo or collaborating with friends in local co-op, the game is yours to enjoy.

Needless to say, not even one of the Donkey Kong series is complete without several eye-catching antagonists, and Retro was quite generous in that regard. In Donkey Kong Country Returns, the player had to face the hypnotic Tiki Tak Tribe, but the real work was done by Tropical Freeze as it shook things up by introducing the Snowmads led by the rotund, horn-blowing Lord Fredrik. The game could be considered to have gained a certain flavor from his icy takeover and Viking-inspired appearance, although his fight with the boss may not have been the most original, as it still seemed to draw some parallels with King K. Rool. In fact, he may have been at the same time a bit of a trope and an injection of new life into the series. The Snowmads had a complete influence on the making of Tropical Freeze, entirely different from the situations caused by Fredrik himself, which was a little bit of a mixed bag for the longtime fans from the frozen battlefields to frost dragons called in.

But at the same time, it is very evident that Retro Studios brought in the same level of respect and courage. They were not hesitant to tamper with the formula if it meant to depict the classic villain characters in revolt or to try out something new with the level mechanics. It was this mixing of innovativeness with the love of the original that allowed the developers to keep on with the saga while still maintaining the same foundations.

Donkey Kong Country’s revival essentially boiled down to a profound respect for the history, and it has been a great success in going even further. Retro Studios didn’t merely reprint a platformer; instead, they breathed new life into a dead franchise. Consequently, both retro lovers and new school players will be able to enjoy the charm, difficulty, and imagination that characterize the series once Donkey Kong Country Returns HD hits the Switch very soon. If you are eager to experience the jungle once again or play it for the first time, Donkey Kong Country is calling, and it’s more colorful than ever.

A New Generation Begins: Nintendo Switch 2 and the Future of Gaming

0

Over‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the years, Nintendo’s gaming hardware has suffered from as much controversy as the company’s victories and defeats. In a way, the success of the Wii was amazing to the point that the mistake the company made with the Wii U was equally big. This is why people are still a little surprised that the reaction to new console announcements is so mixed. Anyway, it looks like the Switch 2 will be the gadget that will bring Nintendo back to the top of the game, not only because the company has learned from its past mistakes, but also because it is more aligned with the requirements of the current ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌gamers.

Although Nintendo was not very successful in the home console market, the company still managed to be a handheld gaming giant for years. The first Switch, however, completely changed the nature of the game by merging the two worlds in a very effective way. In fact, the device’s hybrid nature was not only brilliant but also logical. What this means is that portability was not just a selling point anymore but a core feature, and it was this flexibility that made the Switch accessible to such a diverse group of ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌people.

Among other things, the gaming industry itself has experienced a substantial change since the time of the Wii U. The contemporary customer is very demanding and expects a high level of standardization. Thus, they want their libraries, DLC, and save data to be transferred effortlessly from one console to another. According to a single expert: “It is becoming very difficult to persuade players to switch between different generations when the games they like playing are still running perfectly on their old consoles.” Backwards compatibility has turned into the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌norm.

Backwards Compatibility as a Starting Point

Fortunately, Nintendo does appear to realize that. The Switch 2 will natively support both physical and digital Switch games. That alone provides it with a huge advantage. Instead of coming out with a meager initial range of new games, the Switch 2 will have thousands of games available immediately. High-profile future releases like Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Z-A are already committed to the new hardware, giving it a healthy launch.

But that huge library comes with its own headaches. When the first Switch shipped, it had minimal third-party competition, allowing early exclusives to take center stage. This time around, the Switch 2 will find itself in a much more populated ecosystem. With Microsoft already announcing Call of Duty support and other publishers sure to follow suit, competition for player eyeballs will be intense.

A Power Boost Where It Counts

Spec-wise, the bar is higher than ever. The first Switch was great for its era, but in terms of hardware, it’s now surpassed by things like the Steam Deck. As much as Nintendo usually doesn’t pursue bleeding-edge performance, the Switch 2 should at least keep up with something like the PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X—a fair benchmark for games these days.

4K resolution is also in the cards, particularly with the majority of homes now having 4K televisions. Instead of emphasizing native 4K, Nintendo will depend on Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) tech. This AI-driven upscaling technique could provide a visual enhancement for both new and current games without calling for premier processing capability. That would imply that older titles such as Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey might appear crisper and perform better without requiring a complete remake.

New Tricks for a Familiar Form Factor

There’s also a rumor of innovations in how the Switch 2 interacts with TVs. Wireless connectivity has been rumored, eliminating clunky docks and cables. It’s like a more mature version of the Wii U’s two-screen strategy but with an emphasis on convenience over attachment. Picture playing Mario Kart where one player is on the TV and the other is on the handheld screen—no split-screen required.

And it’s not merely visual. The Switch 2’s improved hardware should make everything run better overall. It’s reported that most current Switch games will load more quickly and play smoothly on the new console, even without dedicated updates. That being said, frame rate caps and other in-game restrictions will still be present unless developers update and optimize their games.

A Digital Shift in Nintendo’s Strategy

Nintendo’s vision for online services and digital content is changing, too. Physical games remain its core business, but digital uptake is increasing. More recent experiments—such as surprise multiplayer trials and a new music app—hint at a more significant and inventive digital future. Such services might have a greater part to play in constructing sustained enthusiasm for Switch 2.

One difficulty? Nintendo’s first-party slate. The original Switch received a tranche of Wii U ports and high-profile exclusives. This time, Nintendo is increasing its in-house development teams and collaborating with third-party developers to keep the momentum going, but establishing that content pipeline requires time.

The market itself has shifted, too. The initial Switch benefited from debuting just as there was a worldwide trend toward home-based entertainment. Without such a wind at its back this time, Nintendo will have to rely more than ever on innovation and reliability to keep players engaged.

A Platform Built for the Future

Nevertheless, Nintendo has a significant edge: a huge, engaged player base. The company just announced 127 million annual active users—more than ever. And if those players can bring their purchases and progress along with them to a new device, adoption is an easier sell.

The Switch 2 doesn’t have to move 150 million units to be a success. By focusing on backwards compatibility, improved performance, and digital growth, Nintendo is putting itself in a position for long-term success. This isn’t a new console—it’s an intelligent refinement of a platform that already revolutionized the way people play.

Fortnite’s Lore Problem: Plot Holes Fans Can’t Ignore Anymore

0

Fortnite‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is a battle royale giant that has made a massive impact among streamers, and is, well, a game that tells a story. If the story arc was enough to hold your attention with what is going on at the island, then you are probably one of the very few people. The narrative has been here for quite a long time, and as a result, it has been splitting the fans into two groups: those who are hooked and those who don’t understand. The move is so slow that it is shifting from a possible mythological origin to a lovely and somewhat annoying ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌explanation.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the year that was just 2019, the Fortnite world seemed to be full of potential. Actually, the end of Chapter 1 was not only an occasion that marked the halt of the Fortnite story, but it also literally tore the sky apart as a result of the meteor explosion and the enigmatic plunge into the void. These were events that became the global culture, and even people who were not in the gaming community could not resist getting involved. Those who saw the live broadcast of the island’s destruction were made to feel that they were a part of it, and it appeared as if Epic Games was thriving in a world with the same characters and some sort of ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌continuity.

But that promise gradually disappeared with the times. The plot of Fortnite has been really inconsistent throughout, but in the latest developments, the lack of a clear direction is very evident. Sometimes the story is used to lead the action, for example, in Chapter 3: Season 2, the resistance theme was very dominant and centrally located. At some other moments, it is so much in the background that it is hardly noticeable; this is, for instance, in Chapter 3: Season 3, where the story barely makes any sense. The change in the mood can be quite sudden. In one season, you may be fighting a reality devouring chrome entity, and the next, you may be hanging out with summer parties. For players who are into the lore and want it to be consistent and evolving, this inconsistency can be frustrating.

At one point, things got even more complicated when Fortnite started telling its story in a different way through comics. The Zero Point and Zero War series, created with the help of Marvel and DC, revealed some of the game’s hidden secrets, such as the secrets of secret bunkers and final parts of massive live events. The irony? Not everyone got to experience them. Those who didn’t buy the comics or couldn’t get them in their country were totally clueless, and a big number of them had to resort to YouTube lore explainers for updates. That shift from in-game to different media storytelling had the story feeling fragmented, and the fans who were unaware of the happenings were left in the dark.

The crossovers, at first, may have seemed to be a part of the confusion, but now they are an integral part of the whole story. It is very interesting to watch Spider-Man or Batman coming onto the island. These relationships sometimes can fit the lore the right way. On the other hand, most of the time, they are just blending. The Seven, a once-mysterious and compelling group, had a little bit of charm left after The Foundation turned out to be based on and voiced by Dwayne Johnson. Now, the distinction between Fortnite’s world and the world of celebrity became ambiguous and weird. Moreover, if you add Ariana Grande skins, LeBron James skins, or The Rock skins as Black Adam to the mix, then it becomes very apparent that the universe is not seamlessly connected. It is a completely different thing that actors can be the voices of characters and that they can be the characters themselves, literally.

Moreover, there are also retcons. At one time, fans constantly imagined that The Paradigm and The Singularity were the same, as they had similar-looking designs and they were the same characters, just different interpretations. But later, the Zero War comics decided to depict them as separate characters, which in turn discredited fan theories. Retcons of this kind make it very challenging for even the most hardcore lore enthusiasts to ever figure out what canon is.

Repetition is another problem that has been raised. Fortnite’s story loop has become stuck in a predictable cycle: something threatens the island, the map shifts, and the heroes band together to prevent it. Large trailers build up each new season, but beneath the surface, the formula doesn’t ever really change. For long-time fans, it’s beginning to feel like déjà vu.

It doesn’t mean that Fortnite’s narrative is dead. The universe has infinite possibilities, and the people surely desire a greater investment in the lore. But until Epic Games manages to integrate these narratives into something cohesive and significant, the story will continue to feel more like a patchwork and less like an epic. Currently, the lore is as elusive and as infuriating as ever.

Fractured Daydream’s Open Network Test Sets a New Standard for SAO Raids

0

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ September 2024 Open Network Test (ONT) was a complete stamina challenge for the servers and the players, to put it simply. Not only was it a peek, but it was the actual environment that made the title one of the most courageous SAO releases of the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌time.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

The ONT Experience: More Than Just a Demo

This‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ definitely wasn’t a demo. The ONT was an open invitation to players from PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC to play at the same time. What made it different was the announcement of the loot transferability. Actually, any accessories or weapons that were obtained in the ONT could be transferred to the full game, so players who started early would be given a nice head start. Gear hunters, who are probably the most passionate, that was an incredibly strong ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌point.

Multiplayer Mayhem: 20-Player Raids That Require Teamwork

Fractured Daydream is not about one-man heroics. It’s about large-scale, co-op chaos. The ONT had 20-player raids in which teams fought legendary bosses such as The Skull Reaper and Sword Golem. Players were divided into five teams of four, each with their own objectives, before congregating for the grand finale.

The initial phase saw teams battle it out to score points based on objectives, enemy slayings, and loot. Next came everyone coming together for one big co-op battle—be it defending siege-towered objectives that were being attacked or fighting a massive boss. With a bit of friendly competition in the mix, the game provided a special highlight to whoever delivered the killing blow to the boss.

Character Variety: Roles, Skills, and Fan Favorites

One of the largest hooks in this game is its character selection. The ONT provided nine of the final 21, each playing classic RPG roles such as Fighter, Tank, Rogue, Mage, Ranger, and Support. Kirito and Asuna served equal DPS duty, Agil stood in as a Tank, and Argo and LLENN provided agility and quickness as Rogues. Oberon excelled at magic disruption, Sinon and Fukaziroh provided terrifying long-range firepower, and Leafa kept them all alive with heals and buffs.

The diversity didn’t just stop at looks—every character had unique mechanics that shifted how you fought fights.

Loot, Mods, and Progression: Rewards Worth Fighting For

No SAO game would be complete without a gear grind, and the ONT did not disappoint. Players could use mods that increased stats such as damage, critical chance, or health. Mods were available in various rarities, and the gold-tier mods provided the most benefit. The twist? You only carried one, so each pickup was a tactical choice.

Bosses and more formidable enemies dropped the most desirable loot, with legendary equipment providing significant performance increases. All the loot from the ONT was transferred to the regular game if players maintained their save data.

Bandai Namco and Dimps went out of their way to make it obvious they were going big. Fractured Daydream was the ultimate SAO crossover, bringing characters, worlds, and timelines together in ways that no fan ever thought possible. It wasn’t about the flash of the cameo appearances—there were solid story points, enemies turned allies, characters brought back from the dead, and special conversations between unlikely partners.

Since the ONT, the game has only continued to develop. New DLC has introduced characters such as M and Pitohui from Gun Gale Online, as well as additional missions, costumes, and guns. New game modes have been released, and a Nintendo Switch demo has allowed even more players to experience 20-player raids and co-op challenges.

With every update, the prospect of larger battles, additional characters, and greater cross-world interaction keeps the player base interested.

SWORD ART ONLINE Fractured Daydream’s ONT was more than a tech test—it was an intent statement. This is a game designed for fans who wish to see their beloved heroes and villains come together, face insurmountable odds, and possibly walk away with the best loot in the digital world.

God of War Ragnarök Sets a New Gold Standard for Accessibility in Gaming

0

God‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ of War Ragnarök is a huge, loud final chapter to Kratos’ Norse saga, but it is also very important in terms of accessibility, a game that broke the ground for the whole genre. As the gaming industry is gradually acknowledging that not all players have the same sensory perception of the world, the new epic from Santa Monica Studio is exceptional. It is enormous, slightly flawed, but certainly a pioneering move that allows more people than ever to play from the mythic ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌realm.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

The comfort of the player with the developers is noticeably indicated in the very first moment of Ragnarök, no matter the proficiency of the player. Right away, you are given the option of a Quick Start or a Guided Setup. This portal allows users to adjust their visuals, sounds, and accessibility settings even before entering the main menu. The turning on of a screen reader, which starts reading everything from the menu, settings, and options, can be done by a mere press of the Square button. It reads out loud, logically and helpfully, the option title, its current value, what the option is for, and how to set it differently. According to a reviewer at Game Accessibility Nexus, this makes the experience of navigating for audio cue-dependent players much less ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌intimidating.

When you make your way into the accessibility menu, it’s easy to see how much consideration has been put into it. It’s full of features—sort of like a maze, but in a good way. There are vision, hearing, motor skill, and motion sensitivity presets, each of which opens up a customized set of options. There’s everything from UI text size (up to XX-Large) and icon size to high-contrast screens and color filters. Whether you’re tweaking HUD elements or the look and feel of the game as a whole, it’s all laid out with one goal in mind: making things easier to read and comprehend. And if you want to drill down even further, you definitely can—tweaking aim assist, puzzle timing, traversal assist, auto pick-up, and more. It’s a huge range of tools, and it’s clear the developers were inspired by accessibility pioneers like The Last of Us Part II.

But great menus don’t always translate to great gameplay, so how does it all hold up in action? For blind and low-vision players, the mix of sound cues, screen narration, and navigation help is a total game-changer. Ross Minor mentions that the game utilizes audio feedback for almost everything—throwing your axe, dodging, and blocking—and even a glossary so you know what any sound is associated with. Using R3 triggers navigation assist, and Kratos will be directed to his next goal, whether part of the main campaign or a side objective. This allows blind players to finally navigate the game’s vibrant world on their terms, instead of simply following a single route.

High-contrast mode is another highlight. It lets you color characters, enemies, objects you can interact with, and danger bright, highly visible colors. You can give Atreus a glowing green, set the enemies red, and have objects you need to use stand out against a darkened background. It’s not just a cosmetic switch—it’s an essential aid for players who have difficulty reading in the game’s dark, atmospheric environments.

But, of course, the system isn’t flawless. Reviewers with disabilities have noted that the screen reader is lovely in many aspects—such as the pause menu and tutorials—but doesn’t work elsewhere, such as in the skill tree, stores, journals, or map. Which means gearing up or doing side quests can be a hassle, turning these moments into infuriating guessing games. The auto-equip option is available in-game, but it does not exactly compensate for the absence of that control. Although all but the most challenging puzzles are accessible, some of the optional ones are still inaccessible because the navigation aid doesn’t always guide toward their solutions, and not all actions are supported by a distinct sound cue.

Despite these problems, overall, the experience is a huge leap forward. A reviewer described the pairing of high-contrast mode and navigation support as revealing the game’s world in ways that weren’t even possible in 2018’s iteration. Being able to explore, battle, and puzzle solve largely independently brings a strong sense of autonomy. The audio design of the game assists as well—3D spatial audio and clear audio cues for various actions make up some of the difference between sighted and non-sighted players.

God of War Ragnarök isn’t only ticking an accessibility box—it’s redefining what accessibility might mean in AAA games. Yes, there’s still plenty to be done, particularly in ensuring every aspect of the game and every menu is fully accessible to everyone. But the range of features here shows that excellent storytelling and inclusive design don’t have to be mutually exclusive objectives. For every gamer who’s ever been left out in the cold by the largest games in business, Ragnarök is an empowering, emotional call to join the fray.

The Suicide Squad’s Most Radical Reinvention in Kill the Justice League

0

If‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the rest of the DC universe were one big tree, the Suicide Squad would be the branch that just doesn’t seem to fit. The Squad, nevertheless, has established a domain in which disorder is the only law. They have shocked and surprised in both comics and movies—and now, they are arriving in the gaming world with a bang with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. It is all that you would expect the opposite to be, but still pretty ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌cool.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

Rocksteady, the studio that gave us the acclaimed Arkham series, has decided to move away from Batman’s dark and serious side and detective mode. In Kill the Justice League, you are immersed in a rundown Metropolis and allowed to play as one of the characters from among Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang. The story is off the wall: Brainiac took over the minds of the Justice League, so it’s undoubtedly the Squad who has to come to the rescue—while they are, of course, avoiding their own personal detonators. To quote a GameGrin review, the result is a third-person shooter that is as ridiculous and chaotic as it is ruthless, hence Arkham’s gloom is replaced with an anarchic comic book-style ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌uproar.

Each member of the Squad contributes to the sort of havoc they indulge in. Harley swings from the ceiling with a grappling hook, Deadshot zooms about with a gadget-laden pack, Boomerang runs at a teleporting burst of speed, and King Shark? He just jumps in and destroys everything. Though every character makes their way around and battles differently, after a time, the gameplay becomes somewhat repetitive—shoot aliens, blow up objectives, repeat. GameGrin comments that despite the flashy movement, missions don’t differentiate themselves from one another, and the loot system fails to provide the rush of actual progression.

And just when you thought it was done, you haven’t. Rocksteady is betting everything on a live-service model, delivering new characters, storylines, and missions via seasonal updates. If you want to witness Brainiac’s ultimate defeat, you’ll have to wait for future content. In the meantime, microtransactions are already implemented, with in-game money (yes, they’re called Luthorcoins) and a battle pass system on the way. Not surprisingly, some gamers feel that they bought half a game, with the other half in the hands of a paywall and a schedule.

There’s still plenty here for fans of DC to get excited about. The dialogue is sharp, packed with dark humor and sassy repartee that feels ripped directly from the best Suicide Squad comics. Tara Strong is back as Harley Quinn, infusing the character with her trademark zest, though some fans believe that her work falls short of her previous best. Captain Boomerang steals scenes more than anyone might have anticipated, while King Shark proves there’s more to him than straight-up brawn. Deadshot, conversely, is sometimes a mite too down-to-earth and tends to get lost in the mix.

One of the most poignant moments of the game is Kevin Conroy’s return as Batman. As reported by The Cosmic Circus, Conroy’s voice has been legendary for a decade, from Batman: The Animated Series to the Arkham trilogy. His cameo in Kill the Justice League is an impactful and sentimental moment, made even more heart-wrenching by the fact that it’s one of his last performances before he passed away. For longtime fans, hearing his Batman one last time is worth showing up for.

You can’t talk about the Suicide Squad without touching on their big-screen resurgence. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film took everything that didn’t work in the 2016 version and turned it on its head—embracing chaos, leaning into weirdness, and still finding a surprising amount of heart. It was a wild, emotional, and really funny ride, declared the Los Angeles Times. That same energy resides in Rocksteady’s game, where heroes are both deadly and cuddly misfits. Both film and video game know that the Squad functions best when they’re violating all the superhero conventions.

Harley Quinn is the poster child of the Squad’s trademark gorgeous chaos. Her path—formerly Joker’s sidekick, then morally ambiguous antihero, then reluctant leader—hasn’t been predictable. In the comics, as evidenced by Harley Quinn #19 (reviewed here at Batman News), her character vacillates between goofy and deplorably human. The game engages that crazy unpredictability, and even when the story stumbles or the gameplay slogs, she remains the star presence.

So what’s in store for the Squad? With Rocksteady promising regular updates, we’re not done with them yet. Is it their bickering team dynamic, their naughty joy in flouting rules, or the sheer theater of Harley Quinn attempting to kill Superman? The Suicide Squad continues to show they’re DC’s most unpredictable—and fun—team. If you’re holding out for the whole experience, perhaps wait, and don’t press the detonator button just yet.

If‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Hollywood has a better thing than a good comeback, then it is a reinvention. In a business where everything is based on make-believe, the most surprising turns in this business are not from the screenplays but from the celebrities themselves. Actors, musicians, and icons who, in a flash, decide to live a totally different life under the same or even different limelight, thereby reminding us that careers, like films, can make some very atypical turns. Going from rock steps to political stages, these ten career switches of Hollywood, there of which will leave you speechless, have been the most surprising turns of careers, the soap doesn’t always remain on screen, the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌evidence.

10. Taylor Momsen – From Cindy Lou Who to Rock Star

It’s unbelievable that the adorable little girl who won over the heart of the Grinch would grow up to shriek into a mic at rock concerts. Taylor Momsen gave up acting after her time on Gossip Girl and took up a life on the road as the frontwoman of The Pretty Reckless. With her husky voice, goth look, and independent spirit, she transformed herself into a full-fledged rock star and hasn’t stopped since.

9. Peter Ostrum – Charlie Bucket to Cow Doctor

As Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Peter Ostrum was born for Hollywood stardom. But when that one, unforgettable role was played, he humbly retreated from the limelight. Rather than pursuing roles in movies, he attended vet school and established a career nursing dairy cows. Today, his “patients” have four legs, and his celebrity is of a quieter, more modest sort—a testament to how fulfillment can sometimes occur far from fame.

8. Daniel Day-Lewis – Oscars to Shoemaking

Daniel Day-Lewis is hailed as one of the greatest actors in cinema, but his career turn could be his most intriguing performance. Three Oscars and a showering of accolades later, he went back to Italy to study the craft of shoemaking. It was not an April Fool’s joke—it was sincere craftsmanship. He would eventually return for a couple of final masterpieces, but his choice of script for shoe soles is one of Hollywood’s most surprising departures.

7. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen – Sitcom Stars to Fashion Icons

The Olsen twins constructed an empire before they were even of driving age. But as quickly as they ascended, they retired from acting to focus on fashion. Through their high-end brand, The Row, they rebranded themselves from former child stars to respected, award-winning designers. Their understated, minimalist style couldn’t be more different from their effervescent on-screen personas—a transformation as calculated as it is dazzling.

6. Arnold Schwarzenegger – Action Hero to Governor

Few career changes are as bold as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s. Having dominated bodybuilding and blockbuster films, he took an even braver step—into politics. Coming out on top in California’s 2003 recall election, he became governor of the state and served two terms, swapping movie explosions for public service. Whether as the Terminator or “the Governator,” Schwarzenegger’s transformation is still one of Hollywood’s most out-there real-life plots.

5. Shirley Temple – From Tap Dancing to Diplomacy

Shirley Temple’s curls and dimples gave her the face of American optimism during the Great Depression, but after retiring from movies in her twenties, she did not fade into nostalgia—she stepped into public service. As U.S. ambassador to Ghana and then Czechoslovakia, Temple demonstrated she had more than charm—she had leadership and intelligence. Her second act in life was no less inspiring than her first.
