Critics call it heartfelt, sharp, and yes—brilliantly cut.

2. The Chestnut Man (2021)

Danish noir at its darkest. When police discover a tiny chestnut figurine at the site of a horrific crime, they stumble upon a case that has been buried for decades but won’t remain there. 1. Giri/Haji (2019)

It is a flashy and engaging British-Japanese crime drama that combines the best of both worlds. Detective Kenzo Mori, who goes to London to trace his missing brother, ends up dealing with the yakuza. Television Finales That Sparked Lasting Division Among Viewers

0
Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

TV finales tend to define how a show is remembered. When they land well, they leave a lasting impression; when they don’t, they can frustrate audiences for years. Some endings are widely praised, others are divisive, and a few continue to spark debate long after the series has ended. Whether through dark conclusions or unexpected twists, these finales have kept fans talking well beyond their final scenes.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

10. Mad Men – “Person to Person.”

On a sober bell’s ring, Don Draper’s story was closed. While a few understood his transformation into a better person as progress, others felt he was only patching up his defects. The close, implying that he was the one who made the Coca-Cola “Hilltop” ad—was it a revelation of a new era or a clever move going back to advertising? Some people liked it; others probably felt disappointed, which made the finale a silent unrest.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

9. Gossip Girl – “New York, I Love You XOXO.”

The last deceit of the series was that Dan was Gossip Girl, after six seasons of lies and tricks. It definitely was a surprising ending, but quite hard to believe. The cast might have managed to wring it out, but the authors’ vision and the character’s heart seemed to be at odds. If it wasn’t for fan service, with its flashy romances and weddings, the wrap-up would’ve looked more complete. Few liked it. Many didn’t. And everybody had their say.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

8. Pretty Little Liars – “Till Death Do Us Part.”

The show did not hide the fact that lies were its main theme, yet the usage of the “evil twin” trope at the last second angered some people. Spencer’s mysterious new identity, combined with a strange British accent, caused more laughs than gasps. However, there are still many fans who are convinced that the finale was the main goodbye and had a great atmosphere, so it is a mixed but important last episode.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

7. Seinfeld – “The Finale.”

It was strange to see the gang face legal charges in a show about them not doing much. The Judge who didn’t help them was thrown in jail along with them, so the trial featured their old bad deeds. Some critics claimed it missed the point, while fans were nostalgic about the humor. It was either the ending most fitting to the show, or those you ask would disagree.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

6. Battlestar Galactica – “Daybreak.”

Initially, it was a brutal and realistic space war portrayal, and then it took a quick turn towards gods and fate. The gods coming in to tidy up the situation left some people amazed and others furious. The makers’ last attempt to intertwine myths and destiny did not harmonize with the show’s gritty style, thus dividing fans of science fiction.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

5. Dexter – “Remember the Monsters?”

Fake death, Dexter left the boat behind, only to reappear as a logger. That was how it closed. Fans were shocked—not in a good way. After so many years, when Dexter was both deeply flawed and complex, his escape from the law felt like a betrayal. The backlash caused the show to return just for the sake of repairing things.

4. How I Met Your Mother – “Last Forever.”

First, Ted met the Mother, then she passed away, and finally, he got back with Robin. Life flashes by in the finale, and we get to see what happened to the characters, which was exactly what fans wanted to see. It was the other end that tried to undo the damage, yet the shoe was already there. It will forever remain as a divided sign-off from the sit-com world.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

3. Game of Thrones – “The Iron Throne.”

One of the most popular series that ended with a big fall. Daenerys’ switch from a liberator to a tyrant, Jon’s weak choice, and Bran’s sudden seizure of power were the most game-shaking events of the last six episodes and appeared as they happened out of nowhere and too quickly. With six episodes to finish everything, quite a few viewers were disappointed. Even though the show was visually stunning, its last moments made people rewrite, review, and revolt.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

2. Lost – “The End.”

At the end of the day, we were left with more questions than answers. For some, the farewell in the church was perfect, but for others, it was a deception that avoided the unsolved riddles. Although the creators claimed the cast had never been dead, it did not put an end to the confusion. Even now, people argue over what made sense in the end.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

1. The Sopranos – “Made in America.”

The Sopranos is one of the few shows whose finale created as much immediate uproar—and discussion—as it did impact. Just when the tension was at its peak, the screen went dark. Was Tony shot? Did it end there? Or did everything just continue as usual? We were stuck looking at the dark screen, uncertain if our TV had malfunctioned or not. David Chase provided some clues, but no definite answer. It was puzzling. It was clever. It was one of those not to forget.

Endings are not always successful, and not all finales can please everyone. However, these last scenes, whether loved or hated, show one thing: great TV keeps the conversation alive—even long after the story is over.

From Stereotypes to Depth: Female Characters and Trauma in Animation

0
Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

Animation has long been fascinated with the human mind, especially its complexities and contradictions. From classic tales of split personalities to modern explorations of trauma, the medium often portrays characters with dual identities or fractured psyches. These stories can entertain, shock, and even inspire empathy, but they also shape how audiences perceive mental health. While some series rely on clichés or exaggeration, others approach psychological struggles with nuance and care, showing that healing, coping, and personal growth are rarely straightforward. Here’s a look at some of the most compelling examples of trauma, dissociation, and duality in animation.

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

Duality has always been a recurring theme in animated storytelling. Characters often embody two selves—a mild-mannered, everyday persona and a hidden, powerful alter ego that emerges in crisis. Classic examples include Bruce Banner transforming into the Hulk or Yami Yugi taking control in Yu-Gi-Oh!. However, as Hazel Jamieson notes, these portrayals rarely reflect the real complexity of dissociative identity disorder (DID). Instead, they tend to oversimplify: characters are either “good” or “evil,” perpetuating the stereotype that people with dissociative disorders are dangerous or unstable. In reality, DID involves a rich internal world and coping mechanisms that are rarely violent. Some modern animation, though, is starting to shift the narrative. Shows like OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes and certain Ben 10 arcs explore internal plurality with empathy, showing that managing multiple selves is about coexistence rather than conflict. This marks a slow but promising move toward more thoughtful portrayals of mental health.

8. Jinx / Powder (Arcane: League of Legends)

Jinx, or Powder, is a striking example of trauma shaping a character’s psyche. Orphaned, neglected, and exposed to constant danger, Powder’s early experiences are devastating. A single catastrophic event—an attempt to save her sister that results in tragedy—triggers her transformation into Jinx. Arcane refuses to reduce her to a diagnosis. We see paranoia, emotional volatility, and hallucinations, but always within the context of a world that has failed her. She might display traits of PTSD, psychosis, or even antisocial behavior, but the series focuses on her lived experience rather than labeling her. Jinx embodies the messy reality of trauma: she is both victim and aggressor, child and chaos, hero and villain. Her story highlights that recovery is non-linear and that circumstances often dictate behavior as much as personal choice.

7. Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Asuka’s confident, abrasive exterior masks profound trauma. Raised by a mentally ill adoptive mother and scarred by her eventual suicide, Asuka internalizes pain that shapes every interaction. Her arrogance and aggression serve as protective armor, keeping vulnerability at bay. Evangelion uses her story to explore the enduring effects of childhood trauma on identity, relationships, and self-worth. Asuka’s struggles resonate because they are authentic: her pain is both personal and emblematic of the show’s broader meditation on human fragility and the need for connection.

6. Chise Hatori (The Ancient Magus’ Bride)

Chise’s early life is filled with rejection, abuse, and isolation. Born with a gift that sets her apart, she suffers at the hands of her own mother in a moment of despair, and later witnesses her mother’s death. The series uses Chise’s journey to explore the interplay of trauma and healing. Magic becomes a metaphor for empowerment and self-worth, as she gradually learns to value herself and trust others. Her story is an intimate portrait of overcoming inner darkness while finding hope and connection.

5. Emilia (Re:Zero)

Emilia’s past is marked by tragedy: the death of her surrogate mother at the hands of the Witch’s Cult leaves her traumatized and her powers unstable. The aftermath traps her in a magical stasis, forcing her to confront centuries of grief upon awakening. Her journey is a careful study of how trauma immobilizes and shapes us. Emilia’s resilience emerges not from forgetting the past but from learning to live alongside it. Her story underscores that healing is arduous, layered, and deeply personal.

4. Kyouka (Bungo Stray Dogs)

Kyouka’s childhood trauma involves being forced into an assassination and witnessing the death of her parents through her own inherited powers. Despite this, she finds redemption and a new sense of purpose with the Armed Detective Agency. Her arc demonstrates that trauma can catalyze growth. The series explores guilt, responsibility, and the transformative power of supportive relationships, showing that even those burdened by past horrors can reclaim agency over their lives.

3. Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

Mikasa’s formative years are defined by extreme loss and violence: the murder of her parents, abduction, and repeated exposure to death and destruction. These experiences mold her into an elite fighter but also leave deep emotional scars. The series uses her story to highlight the duality of strength and vulnerability, exploring how trauma can harden, isolate, and simultaneously forge unbreakable loyalty. Mikasa’s journey is a meditation on survival and the cost of protecting those we love.

2. Nina Fortner / Anna (Monster)

Nina’s life is shaped by cruel experiments, dissociative amnesia, and the manipulations of her twin brother, Johan. Her trauma is relentless, a constant series of memory shocks and identity crises. Monster portrays Nina’s struggle as one of piecing together a fractured self and seeking justice in a world that offers little solace. Her story is a haunting reminder of the mind’s resilience and the lengths it goes to protect itself from unbearable pain.

1. Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)

Yuno Gasai’s abusive upbringing drives the transformation from neglected child to obsessive, violent protector. Locked, starved, and humiliated, her trauma warps her perception of love and survival. Her descent into extreme behavior underscores the thin line between victim and perpetrator. Yuno is a chilling example of how prolonged abuse can distort attachment, morality, and identity, forcing viewers to confront the dark consequences of trauma left unaddressed.

These characters illustrate the many ways trauma, abuse, and dissociation shape identity in animation. While some portrayals rely on sensationalism, others provide profound insights into resilience, growth, and the complexity of the human mind. Through these stories, audiences are reminded that psychological struggles are not black-and-white—they are deeply human, often painful, but also capable of inspiring empathy and understanding. Animation, in this sense, continues to be a powerful medium for exploring the shadowed corners of the psyche.

Leading Actresses Known for Their Height and Screen Presence

0

Hollywood has always leaned on star power, but sometimes that presence is quite literally elevated. While the average American woman stands around 5’4″, some actresses noticeably rise above their peers, bringing a commanding physical presence to both their roles and public appearances. Whether they’re leading dramatic performances, delivering sharp comedic timing, or turning heads on the red carpet, their height adds an extra dimension to their on-screen impact. So, who are some of the tallest actresses working in Hollywood today?

Image Source: Bing Image. License: All Creative Commons

10. Jennifer Lawrence – 5’9″ (175 cm)

Jennifer Lawrence is only a foot away from six feet, but still stands taller than most if she is 5’9″. Her debut as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games was not just one that put a spotlight on her singing skills, but also one that made evident her innate ability to give the character a physical side and power. No matter if she is one of the strong characters in action movies or is playing the role of a witty female in romantic comedies, her height always gives her a certain off-stage accompaniment as well as her on-stage shining.

9. Ann Colter – 5’9″ (175 cm)

Ann Coulter, known most for her sarcastic political commentary, has been a figure in the entertainment world as well, for instance, in Sharknado 3 and as a recurring guest on daytime talk shows. At 5’9″, her somewhat tall stature goes well with her massive personality, so she is never lost in the crowd, no matter the event. In addition to being a force to reckon with in terms of ideas, she is also utterly so in terms of form and content, as her voice and stature make sure she glides none too far below the radar in Hollywood society, whether you like her or not.

8. Stephanie Corneliussen – 5’11” (180 cm)

Model and actress Stephanie Corneliussen of Denmark is the one who blends the European touch and toughness with the glamor of Hollywood. She is almost six feet tall, and her unusual looks and impactful aura have made her very popular on Mr. Robot and American Horror Story, where her image complements the darker and more mysterious aspects of the plot, gaining her recognition. 7. Whitney Cummings – 5’11” (180 cm)

The very presence of Whitney Cumming, who is one of the best things that comes with height, is the whole package of confidence and a sense of humor. The 5’11” tall stand-up comedian, writer, and actress has turned their sharp wit and elevation to their advantage on shows like Whitney and 2 Broke Girls. Rather than trying to hide her distinct quality of appearing, she often jokes about it, and thus, what other people might see as a downside is what she uses in her stand-up. In a boardroom, she could be just as powerful a force as in a comedy club, where she performs.

6. Ilfenesh Hadera – 5’11” (180 cm)

Ilfenesh Hadera got there by playing in Baywatch, She’s Gotta Have It, and The Blacklist, and with her 5’11” size, she made sure to be a visual picture of the leadership she portrayed. Her characters are firm but friendly as she mixes the qualities of sportiness, grace, and charm. Hardly ever is her height pointed out as the reason she is such an unforgettable actress; rather, it is just one of the elements that add to her unique charm.

5. Tricia Helfer – 5’11” (180 cm)

Tricia Helfer is well known by science fiction fans as the quintessential Cylon of Battlestar Galactica. Being 5’1″ tall with model features and attitude, she was able with her commanding presence to impress and elicit fear, thus making her character successful as a seductive and mysterious machine. Moreover, for her achievements in sci-fi, Helfer has also been in comedies and has demonstrated a lot more than just being a pretty face; however, if her height is not to be considered, she is definitely being overshadowed by the rest of the cast for the scenes she unwillingly breaks into.

4. Mariel Hemingway – 5’11” (180 cm)

Mariel Hemingway, the daughter of the one and only film director and granddaughter of the literary icon Ernest Hemingway, has carved her path in Hollywood with her remarkable acting talent. Her 5’11” frame, complemented by her natural elegance, has been the medium through which she has delivered her memorable performances in movies like Star 80 and Superman IV. Talent and not her surname were the foundation of her career; however, it was her presence that made her stand out. Besides her height, which adds to her appeal, she is capable of commanding the screen in both serious and comedic roles.

3. Rachel Hunter – 5’11” (180 cm)

Rachel Hunter got her start as a model but soon became an actress and television host. At 5’11”, she possesses the timeless runway physique, and it easily carried over to her appearances on screen in films such as Two Shades of Blue and her travel show, Rachel Hunter’s Tour of Beauty. On television or in movies, Hunter’s statuesque figure and down-to-earth nature have maintained her presence in the public eye for decades.

2. Stacy Keibler – 5’11” (180 cm)

Stacy Keibler initially became known in the professional wrestling arena before arriving in mainstream entertainment. With her athleticism and long legs, her 5’11” height provided a remarkable advantage both in the ring and subsequently on shows such as Dancing With the Stars. 1. Nicole Kidman – 5’11” (180 cm)

Not only is Nicole Kidman an Oscar-winning actress, but also one of the tallest stars in Hollywood. She and her stature, along with her grace, have made her a red carpet icon for years. Besides that, she’s tall with her wide-ranging roles from Moulin Rouge! to The Hours and Big Little Lies. The height of her character is not only a matter of fact—it is also a reference to her acting skills of playing characters, which at the same time possess emotional complexity and are strong.

Honorable Mentions – Other Tall Queens

Numerous tall actresses in Hollywood are tall, and these top 10 countdown actresses narrowly miss the list. Lucy Lawless, who achieved fame as the warrior woman in Xena: Warrior Princess, is 5’11” tall and always looks powerful and confident. Abbey Lee was a very strong presence both in Mad Max: Fury Road and The Neon Demon, thus the actress, who is almost six feet tall, had quite the inimitable one for the screen.

Swedish actress Lena Olin and Vikings star Alyssa Sutherland are the ones who prove that height can be an added layer of depth to an already impressive skill set. And of course, Sigourney Weaver is there too — at 5’11”, she wasn’t long in helping to define the female action star category with her landmark role in Alien as Ellen Ripley.

Just being tall will not turn an actress into a star; however, it might be the reason that gives her a unique characteristic, which enables her to be noticed among the others. Not only are these ladies not tearing down their physiques, but they are also doing it to their advantage, reminding us that talent comes in all sizes. In Hollywood, it is not a matter of being included in the crowd; rather, it is about standing out, and literally, you cannot be taller.

Films Undermined by Endings That Fell Short of Expectations

Few things are more frustrating than a movie that falls apart in its final moments. You spend hours getting invested in the characters and the story, expecting a satisfying payoff—only for the ending to miss the mark entirely. Sometimes it feels rushed, other times it clashes so sharply with everything that came before that it undermines the entire experience. In the worst cases, a weak conclusion can overshadow an otherwise strong film and leave a lasting negative impression. Here’s a look at ten movies where the endings didn’t just disappoint—they defined how those films are remembered.

10. The Grey

Liam Neeson vs. wolves—what could go wrong? The setup for The Grey is survivalist gold: after a plane crash, Neeson’s character leads a pack of men through the Alaskan bush, stalked by a pack of killing wolves. The tension mounts to a fever pitch, and the trailer suggests an epic battle of man against beast. But as one enraged viewer recounts, the film ends just as Neeson is poised to meet the alpha wolf for the very first time, cutting to black before the fight has even begun. Not even the post-credits shot, in which the man and wolf both lie out in survival mode, does anything to shed light on the situation. As Robert Vaux and Fawzia Khan say, “audiences were set up for a suspenseful and action-filled fight between Ottway and the wolves, but it ended rather anticlimactically.”

9. Thor: Ragnarok

Connected narratives are what Marvel films are well known for, but sometimes continuity comes at the expense of a satisfying ending. Thor: Ragnarok is a wild, colorful ride in which Thor, Loki, and their companions fight to salvage Asgard. They win—sort of—so that the film can have an instant setup for the next huge crossover, Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos kills fleeing Asgardians. The heroes’ victory is soon reversed, so that in the end, the audience feels that the film surrendered its conclusion to the greater Marvel machine. As Robert Vaux and Fawzia Khan observe, “the protagonists do nothing, and the Asgardians get killed anyway.”

8. The Accountant

Ben Affleck’s The Accountant is a glossy, action-packed thriller with a mysterious lead and plenty of suspense. But when the big twist finally arrives—Jon Bernthal’s character being Affleck’s secret brother—it falls flat. The film gives away nothing in advance toward this reality, making it random rather than earned. According to Robert Vaux and Fawzia Khan, “the big reveal of the movie is no more than an announcement. Stories must be able to hold up, start to finish.”

7. Spectre

James Bond fans waited years for Blofeld, the best Bond bad guy, played in this one by Christoph Waltz. Spectre spends most of its time setting up the character as the behind-the-scenes mastermind of all of Bond’s suffering. But then the climactic confrontation arrives, and it fails: Bond simply shoots at Blofeld’s helicopter, and it goes down, and the villain is taken down easily. As one of the Reddit commenters opined, all that build-up for so anticlimactic a defeat left the fans in disappointment. According to Redditor dontforgetyourshoes, “All that setup for Christoph Waltz’s character. And then Bond just shoots up his helicopter a few times with a pistol, it blows up, and he gets apprehended.”

6. Sunshine

Danny Boyle’s Sunshine is a slow-burning, visually impressive sci-fi film about a group trying to re-ignite the dying sun. It’s a tense, character-driven drama for the majority of its duration. Then, out of nowhere, the movie goes into slasher mode with a human villain who obliterates the mission. This jolting genre shift confused and annoyed most fans. As one Redditor lamented, the ending “attempts to be Event Horizon and destroys all it was heading towards.” Redditor Tisdue stated, “Out of nowhere, it attempts to be Event Horizon and destroys all it was heading towards. So disappointing.

5. Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward is about kindness, goodness, and goodwill in the world. So for the film to end with its young hero, Trevor, stabbed to death in meaningless violence, is a shock. The ending is so bleak and out of sync with the film’s uplifting message that people were left reeling. As a Redditor put it, “The ending is so woefully sad, and they did not have to end it that way.” Another Redditor stated, “The Pay It Forward shock death was a Shameless Oscar-grab.

4. Now You See Me

A heist thriller featuring stage magicians pulling off impossible heists? Sign us up! Now You See Me sparkles with its snappy tricks and twisty plot—until the final reveal, which suggests that magic might exist, and that the FBI agent tracking down the magicians is a mole from their side. The twist of the movie is so confusingly and poorly explained that it left everyone scratching their heads.

3. The Village

M. Night Shyamalan is the master of the twist ending, but the worst offender is The Village. The film creates an unsettling, isolated 19th-century village under attack from supernatural creatures lurking in the woods. The twist? It’s actually modern-day, and the monsters are just townsfolk wearing masks. Critics and audiences were let down by the twist, which derailed the entire conceit.

2. Remember Me

Remember Me is a romantic drama that spends the majority of its time discussing grief, love, and family. Then, at the very end, it’s revealed that the protagonist is waiting in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The revelation was so sudden and exploitative that audiences were left speechless and outraged. Employing a real tragedy as a last-minute plot twist was universally criticized as tacky and manipulative. In The Independent, “The last-minute twist — that Pattinson is inside the World Trade Center, seconds before the 9/11 terrorist strikes — is so atrociously misjudged that it made the film into some kind of bad-taste joke.”

1. The Mist

Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist is a masterclass in suspense and terror, up to the end. In a gut-wrenching twist, the hero, believing all is lost, kills his friends to protect them from the monsters outside, just as the military troops soon thereafter arrive to save the day. The abruptness and brutality of the ending divided audiences, with some cheering its shock value while others condemned it as needlessly sick.

Directed in war-torn Tehran in the 1980s, this Iranian horror film is a combination of political statements and supernatural frights.
