These are the people that we watched growing up, the artists that we thought would still be on top after many years, only to have their lives ended abruptly. Every death is followed by a huge wave of grief, which is the fans’ and Hollywood’s immediate reaction of sympathy, and which they never entirely recuperate from, whether it be a child star, a teen idol, or a breakthrough talent just about to be famous. On top of it, these are the 13 most impactful young celebrity deaths whose legacies kept on living not only because the stars are no more, but also because of the continuation of their ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌legacy.

13. Sawyer Sweeten (19)

Everybody Loves Raymond fans grew up watching Sawyer Sweeten play Geoffrey Barone, one of Ray’s twins. Sawyer was remembered as sweet and gentle off-camera, making his 19-year-old suicide that much more devastating. His death shocked audiences and co-stars, who went on to pay tribute to him by naming a theater after him.

12. Heather O’Rourke (12)

With her big-eyed naivety and her spine-tingling delivery, “They’re here!”, Heather O’Rourke became the poster child for Poltergeist. But in real life, an unexpected bout of intestinal disease took her life at the age of 12. The news of her death weighed heavily over the last film of the franchise, making her an eternally youthful horror icon.

11. Cameron Boyce (20)

Disney lovers were very much delighted by the acting of Cameron Boyce in Jessie and Descendants. He was so full of life and vigor that he became one of the most prominent stars of the network. Thus, when he died in his sleep due to a seizure caused by epilepsy, the news of his death had a crushing impact on the world, especially on those who had watched him grow. The unexpected death he suffered as a result of a peculiar car malfunction that trapped him in his home brought a shock to Hollywood. They keep talking about him as if he were a great light amongst the dark, but he departed too soon.

9. Angus Cloud (25)

Through Fezco in Euphoria, Angus Cloud was one of the most honest and raw characters, which is why he was loved by the greatest number of fans. Angus died as a result of an unintentional overdose, not long after his father had passed away. His family shared that he had been deeply sorrowful, which only made his demise more tragic. He was remembered by fans and co-stars for his witty sense of humor and for being open about mental health.

8. River Phoenix (23)

Few stars shone hotter in the late ’80s and early ’90s than River Phoenix. From Stand By Me to My Own Private Idaho, he was considered one of the most promising actors of his generation. His death outside the Viper Room after a drug overdose was not only a loss for Hollywood but a cultural earthquake. His brother Joaquin later paid tribute to him by naming his son River.

7. Corey Haim (38)

Corey Haim was the teen heartthrob of the ’80s, stealing the limelight t The Lost Boys and Lucas. He was very open about his drug addiction, and although officially he died of pneumonia at 38, the years of struggle, which fans were not aware of, had affected them. His life centered around the spotlight and, at the same time, was a cautionary tale.

6. Brad Renfro (25)

At only 11 years old, Brad Renfro was discovered for The Client. No doubt, he possessed extraordinary talent. Nevertheless, the celebrity in Hollywood that came with a great cost, Renfro, coped with drug problems throughout his short career. The cause of his death was a heroin and morphine overdose at the age of 25, thus a sad exit from a career that once looked boundless.

Lee Thompson Young shot to household fame thanks to The Famous Jett Jackson and continued to take on more mature roles, like Rizzoli & Isles. The news of his suicide at 29 hit like a bomb thrown among fans who witnessed his growing up as a hero. Moreover, it encouraged conversation about mental health in Hollywood again.

4. Jonathan Brandis (27)

A nineties pop culture icon, Jonathan Brandis was in The NeverEnding Story II and SeaQuest DSV. The incident of his suicide at 27 surprised his fan base, especially those who decorated their bedroom walls with his posters. Friends such as Jaleel White have since elaborated on the deep pain caused by his passing.

3. Jansen Panettiere (28)

The younger brother of Hayden Panettiere, Jansen, was recognized as a voice actor in Blue’s Clues, Racing Stripes, and Ice Age: The Meltdown. His death was due to an enlarged heart at the age of 28 only which thus a terribly heartbreaking incident that even young, healthy-looking stars are not totally secure from tragedy.

Quickly rising with Gen V and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Chance Perdomo was considered one of the most talented youngsters of his ilk by many. The tragic news of his death in a motorcycle accident was such a shock to the industry that Gen V decided not to rehire someone else to play his part but rather to adjust the storyline to honor him instead.

1. Malcolm-Jamal Warner (54)

In a sense, the article extends the “young” idea quite literally, but it still hits the fans who were kids while he was. Warner, the extremely familiar face from The Cosby Show, died of very sad events while he was away in Costa Rica. At 54, he was still very vibrant a nd his passing was the end of an occasion for those who had been keeping an eye on him since his early days.
