Let’s face facts—Zac Efron will forever have a special place in pop culture as Troy Bolton, the crooning basketball player who captured hearts in High School Musical. But if you still only see him in your mind’s eye as the Disney golden boy with gorgeous hair and a devastating grin, you’ve seriously underestimated him. Throughout the years, Efron has risked it all, pushed his acting range, and demonstrated he’s greater than a wistful romance fantasy. From dark dramas to sentimental musicals, these ten movies depict how he’s become one of Hollywood’s most pleasantly unexpected stars.

10. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)

One of the gruesome yet captivating things is Efron’s transformation into the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy. Noticing his go-to style, he, instead of using it, brings out only a little bit of the charm, searingly real, a man hiding monstrosity under charm. It is quite a hard week to come through, and although the movie dipped in popularity, Efron’s considerate performance got almost all positive reviews. Bundy is not put in a good light by Efron; on the contrary, he reveals underneath the dark charm, which is the reason for the killer’s lethality. It is the one that made the most people realize that Efron was capable of going dark and winning.

9. The Paperboy (2012)

Through The Paperboy, Efron makes a sharp turn, dramatically far away from his usual image of the boy-next-door. Jack Jansen is a young and unseasoned man who eventually gets involved in a deadly game of lust, crime, and corruption. Along with Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey, he produces a strong and compelling performance in this strange, intense, and sometimes crazy movie. The film only got mixed reviews, while the actor’s work in it received very positive comments for showing vulnerability and the great intensity of the character. It was the turning point when he was not hesitant to get dirty, both in the literal and emotional sense, for the sake of storytelling.

8. That Awkward Moment (2014)

Along with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, Efron gave a stellar performance in this modern romantic comedy centered around 20-something relationships and friendship. Jason is likable because he is charming, flawed, and sometimes a little unaware of the situation, and thus, he is the most relatable of the characters. The rom-com in question didn’t bring about a revolution, but with his mix of humor and drama, Efron turned the film into a light, breezy watch. His presence also strengthens the point that very few people are as proficient in the role of a likable jerk as he is.

7. The Greatest Showman (2017)

One thing we have learned from The Greatest Showman is that Efron still possesses the artistic power to hold the spotlight in a musical. Playing the role of Phillip Carlyle, the suave, incredulous business partner of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman), he contributes both charm and steadiness to the circus extravaganza. No wonder the movie’s big moment is their duet “Rewrite the Stars,” where Efron and Zendaya are stunning, appealing, and very romantic. The ability that comes naturally to Efron, plus his interaction with the other actors, is what makes this his performance that most of the public is partial to.

6. The Lorax (2012)

Even if you don’t see him, there is no question that Efron’s charm is definitely felt. In The Lorax, where he voices Ted, he essentially brings life to a bright, nature-loving adventure that is equally enjoyable and thought-provoking. Neither Efron nor Taylor Swift (Audrey’s voice) singing is a fact; however, their voice acting gives the story the needed lightness and love, which is a must for the earth-saving theme. This is a charming animated movie that not only showcases Efron’s appeal but also lasts beyond the kids’ world.

5. Neighbors (2014)

As Teddy Sanders, the frat boy neighbor who throws wild parties and annoys Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, Efron was the biggest highlight of the movie. With the permission of this vulgar comedy, he lightened up his comedic timing and also mocked his own persona. He’s hilarious, cocky, and at the same time, a little bit likable. Besides, it was the movie that opened the door for him to take on the role of a mature man in other movies, showing that he possessed the power to leave the Disney world and still manage to be successful in naughty, R-rated comedies.

4. High School Musical (2006)

The film that was not only his career but also a whole generational addiction to the Wildcats basketball was literally the one he did. By playing the Troy Bolton character, Efron became the face of the Disney musical era’s golden period. Even though the singing in the first film was not done by him but by Drew Seeley, his charm and heartfelt sincerity were what made the character memorable. High School Musical didn’t just make him a star; it made him a cultural icon.

3. 17 Again (2009)

This body-swap farce allowed Efron to demonstrate his dramatic and comedic range at the same time. As the teenage version of Matthew Perry’s character, he gets the everyman quirks of an adult in a teenager’s body just right. It’s a sweet, affecting performance that conveys both the absurdity and passion of a second chance at life. This film solidified Efron’s status as a star who was not just pretty to look at; he had actual acting chops to support it.

2. Hairspray (2007)

Before The Greatest Showman, there was Hairspray. Efron as Link Larkin was a triple threat as he danced, sang, and spoke his way through an enormous, lively musical number with amazing ease. Besides, he was very funny and charming in the 1960s setting and could have easily been mixed in with the other actors without anyone noticing. In the company of the likes of John Travolta, Queen Latifah, and Michelle Pfeiffer, Efron still manages to be the boy-next-door with that extra bit of Broadway flair.

1. The Iron Claw (2023)

One of the best moments in Zac Efron´s career was his portrayal of Kevin Von Erich in The Iron Claw. The physical change is outstanding, but it is the emotional side that really moves the audience to tears. As the only one left out of the famous wrestling family, Efron shows his acting repertoire of in-your-face pain and underplayed stoicism. It’s a heartbreaking, grown-up role that shows how far the artist has come from the days of Disney. To be sure, this is the turning point in Zac Efron’s acting career; from here on, Kevin was the real one.

He has gone from the realm of musicals and teen comedies to an emotionally draining drama, and in the process, Zac Efron has become one of the most interesting artists of the generation. In fact, he has proved that change is not only doable, but it is actually his strongest power. Thus, whether he is making you laugh, cry, or sing along, one thing is clear: the story of Zac Efron is far from over, and the titles with which he will shine have not been released yet.
