Just when a Wednesday thought things couldn’t get any weirder and crazier, now is definitely not the time to say that. This comes with the introduction of the second season of 2 on Netflix. However, that is not the end of it because Wednesday is not the only one who takes over Nevermore Academy. No, all hell breaks loose because all of the members of the Addams Family move in with her. This is arguably the most fun to be had with the theme of Addams that has occurred during a Wednesday season to date. Here’s why.
Nevermore Academy is no longer Wednesday’s playground alone. This year, the institution has been transformed into a fully functional playground for the Addams family. Pugsley is a student, while Morticia is a regular visitor, in addition to Gomez, who can barely contain his excitement whenever he is in the institution. Wednesday’s grandmother, Grandmama Hester Frump, is up to her old tricks as well. For Wednesday, having the whole family in the institution is both hilarious and terrifying at once. What is more disturbing is fencing with her mom in public in the presence of her classmates, in addition to watching her grandma run a mortuary empire.
Pugsley, played by Isaac Ordonez, has grown, both physically and narratively. The writers even reference his summer growth spurt, with Morticia joking, “Pugsley shot up like poison oak this summer.” Beyond his height, Pugsley gains new supernatural abilities and a richer storyline that lets him step out of Wednesday’s shadow. His awkward, heartfelt attempts to fit in at Nevermore are both funny and endearing, making him one of the season’s breakout stars.
Catherine Zeta-Jones returns as Morticia, whose position at Nevermore puts her in constant contact with Wednesday. Their mother-daughter dynamic is the emotional anchor of the season. Between fencing lessons, snarky exchanges, and cringeworthy confrontations, the show captures the frustration and humor of having an overbearing parent constantly in your space.
Joanna Lumley has the right amount of flair for the character of Grandmama Hester Frump. The terrifying mother of Morticia and proprietor of the Frump Mortuaries has a fantastic destiny of becoming the preferred pet gofer within the dynamics of the Addams family if what Wednesday says has got to be true. For a character with a keenness for fun and with clothing-themed humor, she has it all.
Also appearing more often is Uncle Fester, played by Fred Armisen, coming up with more and more daring plans to help Wednesday. Even Thing, of course, steals scenes once more, thanks to the absolutely perfect acting portrayal by Victor Dorobantu, as if this appendage had a personality all its own.
The school, however, appears to come alive as ever. Steve Buscemi makes his first appearance as the mysterious Principal Barry Dort, as well as Billie Piper as the passionate head of music, the werewolf Isadora Capri. Joined by familiar protagonists such as Enid Sinclair and Bianca Barclay, a fresh lineup of supernatural protagonists, including the moody werewolf Bruno, joins the mix.
Season 2 doubles down on the mysteries that make Nevermore addictive. Tyler Galpin and his mother, the formidable Hyde, stir trouble, while hidden secrets and supernatural twists lurk around every corner. The season balances school drama with fantasy, keeping fans guessing and deeply invested.
The location shoot in Ireland has added a certain grandeur to this series. The cast, which also includes Ortega, Zeta-Jones, Guzmán, and Lumley, is thriving in this environment. The rapport they exude has managed to translate onto the screen, making their family dynamics work wonderfully well.
Season two is more than the continuation of Wednesday’s story; it’s a celebration of the world of the Addams Family as a whole. Every character has a chance to take center stage, while also retaining their origins in terms of dark comedic tones, macabre flair, and quirky family relationships. The addition seems organic, as opposed to being a forced addition, providing a more complex, darker experience.
With new powers, new rivalries, and the full Addams family front and center, Season 2 delivers the quintessential Addams experience. The series has amplified its kooky, gothic, and “ooky” elements while keeping the emotional heart of the family intact. If you’re not watching, you’re missing one of the most delightfully twisted seasons the Addams Family has ever had.
Wednesday Season 2 is proof that you can add more depth to your series without forgoing your original theme. With each member of the Wednesday’s family, as well as lots of new faces, finally getting their turn in the spotlight, the series has given the audience what they want: more mayhem, more mystery, and more fun in the Addams style. This is definitely a family reunion you wouldn’t want to miss.
