Overwatch 2 isn’t only about quick aim or reflexive reactions, but also about outsmarting your enemies using cunning tactics and mechanical skill. No matter if you’re a main tank, support, or DPS, there’s always something complex to master that can give you a serious advantage in games. Here are 10 lesser-known mechanics and strategies in Overwatch 2 that can catch your enemies off guard—and possibly even land you a spot in the next play of the game.
1. Doomfist – Slam Cancel
Doomfist loves chaos, and this trick adds another level to his mobility. Following a Seismic Slam, immediately rocket punch or power block upward. Doomfist can maintain his vertical momentum and fire farther than he normally would—ideal to get to high ground or get involved as a flying distraction in team fights.
2. Reinhardt – Fast Earthshatter
Rein’s ultimate can swing a match, but its telegraphing animation usually alerts the opposing team. To catch an unsuspecting Earthshatter, attempt to ult and jump in the air—this bypasses some of the wind-up animation, making it more difficult to respond and raising your odds of catching multiple targets.
3. Tracer – Vertical Blink
While Blink tends to dash horizontally, you can technically use it in vertical movement. With jumps and blinks towards small ledges or slanted surfaces, Tracer can ascend to places that are otherwise inaccessible. It’s an excellent method for discovering new escape routes or evacuation paths when things turn sour.
4. Ramattra – Double Armor Trick
Timing is crucial for Ramattra. If you’re already in Nemesis Form and your armor is low, instantly cancel it and pop your Annihilation ultimate. This puts another armor bonus on top, which lets you take more damage and trade more while under pressure during a fight.
5. Doomfist – Turn Punch
Doomfist isn’t finished yet. Rocket Punch tends to send him on a straight trajectory, but by doing a quick camera flick and jumping mid-punch, you can bend your way a bit. This “Turn Punch” helps you avoid projectiles more easily, cut around corners, or surprise enemies who are assuming you’re heading in a straight line.
6. Sigma – Accretion Combo
Sigma can cause serious damage by pairing his Accretion (boulder toss) with his main fire. Toss the boulder, and fire a Hypersphere instantly before the animation ends. This fast combo will eliminate many squishies instantly if you execute it cleanly.
7. Mercy – Resurrection Spin Tech
Reviving an ally places Mercy in a dangerous position, but you can save yourself with a little trick. Quick spinning of the camera while you cast makes her wings—yes, her wings—deflect or absorb some of those headshots from behind, making it slightly less easy for enemies to get fatal damage.
8. Doomfist – Diagonal Punch
Another Doomfist ability that’s all about movement. If you’re aligning Rocket Punch with an angled ledge and jumping while casting, Doomfist will shoot diagonally upwards. Pair this with Seismic Slam or a powered punch to travel enormous distances or get into places most players wouldn’t even think of.
9. D.Va – Eject Boost
When D.Va’s mech is destroyed, she’s vulnerable. However, if you can hold the jump when ejecting, she’ll jump higher off the ground. This provides her with more hang time and makes her more difficult to target, potentially giving you time to escape or reposition for a quick remake or potshot in pilot form.
10. Reaper – Deception Shadow Step
Reaper’s Shadow Step is excellent for surprise repositioning, but it can also be employed for faking out foes. Point it at your feet and use the ability—you’ll get invulnerability for a short amount of time without moving. Enemies might waste important abilities or ultimate, believing that you’ve teleported away. If executed correctly, it can even save you from one-shot ultimates such as D.Va’s Self-Destruct.
Mastering these lesser-seen tricks isn’t so much about flair—it’s about getting every ounce of utility out of your hero and outmaneuvering your foes in subtle, unsuspecting fashions. Overwatch 2 is riddled with finicky mechanics, and the more you do with them, the better the game feels. So head to the practice range, give these a shot, and bring some tricks to the next match.
