Nothing‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is more powerful in an action film than when the characters face danger head-on without waiting for rescue support. In the past, women were a mere sidekick of male characters in action films, being the cast of love interests, hostages, or background eye candy. The difficult part is over. By one punch, one sword attack, one defiant stand after another, female heroes acquired the limelight and changed the genre’s standards. Unlike these characters, who barely survived explosions, these characters went beyond them, and thus, they became the owners of the explosions. These female characters, through their sheer determination, rewrote the pretty much male-dominated genre, and here they are, their names displayed below, ten of the unforgettable heroines who reshaped films and proved that strength could come in different ways.

10. Fiona (Shrek)

Princess Fiona destroyed the stereotype of a fairy tale by demonstrating her fighting skills instead of waiting for someone to rescue her from a tower. In the Shrek movies, she is a fighting expert, a problem solver, and a very tough-hearted person who is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Whether she is leading a saving operation or turning into her ogre form, Fiona is the perfect combination of humor, love, and real fighting skills. She demonstrated that even an animated heroine could be multi-faceted, tough, and powerful without apologizing for it.

9. Merida (Brave)

Merida came into the Pixar family of characters with a bow, a perfect shot, and an iron will to not follow tradition. She is not looking for love or approval; she is standing up for her freedom and her family. By facing up to ancient curses and scary monsters, Merida uses both bravery and kindheartedness. Her journey affirms the fact that hero characters do not necessarily have to be equipped with swords or superpowers; sometimes, a strong will can be the sharpest weapon.

8. Éowyn (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)

Éowyn went to fight the enemy in the disguise of a man and didn’t do it for the sake of getting glory—rather, she was asserting her right to fight. Her fight against the Witch-king is still considered one of the most emotional and epic moments in the fantasy film genre. By resisting being thrown aside, Éowyn becomes the hero who eventually changes the outcome of the war. Her courageous act is a reminder that most of the time, the path to greatness is paved by the ones who are underestimated the most.

5. Sarah Connor (The Terminator Series)

One of the most significant character changes in the history of action movies, Sarah Connor’s progression, is her initial character as a normal woman and finally a tough fighter who is making her son, as well as the planet, ready for a frightening future. Wonder Woman can be described as a fiercely fighting character; however, she did not lose her compassion at any time. 3. Imperator Furiosa (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Furiosa is the center, both from a moral and an emotional point of view, of a movie filled with disorder, which is the reason why she stands out. Furiosa, the leader of a rally for a desperate flight in a harsh desert, was motivated by the idea of justice, not that of supremacy. Her courage and her being in command led to the rewriting of the concept of a contemporary action hero, both in terms of appearance and feeling.
